As is to be expected, there was a lot of information revealed in this book. The main characters get answers to a lot of their questions, but obviously not all of them. The running and hiding continues, and things get a lot more complicated before they start to straighten out.
After the exposition of the last novel, The Calling is a great “middle book” in the trilogy. It gives the reader a more nuanced perspective on each character, and allows their relationships and identities to grow and change.
When I first picked up this book, I was kind of frustrated that Darkness Rising was a “new” trilogy with new characters, rather than connecting more fully with the Darkest Powers series. Once I got to know the characters, though, it was kind of a nice change of pace. The world-building was still the same, and there were similarities, but the new characters were just as interesting to me, in different ways.
