This is the latest in a string of running memoirs I’ve read over the past year or so, and I mostly found it to be one of the better ones. In Ultramarathon Man, Karnazes mostly narrates his experiences running a variety of races, including an ultra-marathon up (and down) a mountain, and another across Death Valley. It’s less about running and the running community – though he does touch on these briefly – and way more about his personal successes and occasional failures with the sport.
A while back, I was searching for books that dealt with running on Audible – and this is one of the ones that I stumbled on. And right from the beginning, Long’s story interested me. I think it was because The Long Run was partly about running, but more so about personal struggle and how someone attempts to overcome some truly horrific circumstances.
This week was generally very slow and unexciting. I spent most of my time working and sleeping, to be honest. It was just one of those weeks, you know? After warming up quite a bit over the last few weeks, this weekend suddenly decided to be much more cold for the first couple days, so that didn’t help my mood at all. By the last couple days, it’s warmed up a bit again, though. I’m hoping it’ll stay that way.
I heard about Williams (aka the “slow fat triathlete”) a few years ago, but never got around to reading her book. Lately, I’ve been on a bit of a fitness-reading kick, so I picked this one up and decided to read it.
It was hilarious!
It was really the tone and encouragement that made this book, though there was also a multitude of technical advice and training information that would be extremely useful to newer runners.
