The last few books in the series have really been delving more into the supernatural – and the erotic – side of things, and away from Anita’s roots as an animator/necromancer. I really liked that this novella brings back that side of her, reminding us of where the series began.
At the beginning of the book, I started to get really excited. It seemed like the whole Anita/Richard/Jean-Claude thing was finally getting itself sorted out. And then … everything got really, really complicated.
I read this book because I felt like I should just finish out the series. To be honest, though, it got even less impressive than the events of Fifty Shades of Grey and Fifty Shades Darker were. (Fair warning: there will be spoilers below. Don’t read on if you’ve somehow managed not to find out what happens until now.)
Beauty’s Release starts out with a change in location yet again. This time, however, it’s to an entirely different area of the world, and this part of the world is inherited by … Arabs!
Oh boy, the things I could say about this. Eroticization of the Other, for starters? Depiction of the “harems” of the Middle East in highly sexualized ways? Oh, and a rather disturbing section of the book where it basically implies that all women in the Middle East have been mutilated so that they can only act as sex toys, never as willing participants capable of pleasure?
Yet again, there’s a lot more spanking in this book than you’re probably looking for. But, on the upside, there’s at least a change in scenery from the decadence of the Castle, and there’s a bit more of a look into the psychology of the characters, particularly the slaves, since they’re in the Village and are actually able to hold conversations with each other now.
