From the cover:

Ramona’s third evil ex-boyfriend, Todd Ingram, is currently dating the former love of Scott Pilgrim’s life! Envy Adams broke Scott’s heart a year and a half ago. Now she and her evil art-rock band are back, and they’re getting Scott’s band to open a show two days from now! That’s just enough time for Scott to fight Todd, keep Ramona happy, fend off demented ex-girlfriends, and practice that new setlist. Right?? Don’t miss the latest chapter in the graphic novel saga The Globe and Mail calls “Canada’s answer to Tank Girl!”

(This is the third book in the Scott Pilgrim series, after Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life, and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.)

I think that this is where O’Malley’s series actually starts to pick up a bit.

There are still a lot of things going on that are rather strange in Scott Pilgrim & The Infinite Sadness, but there’s more context and they seem to fit better. The video game feeling is still there – in fact, is emphasized in some places with very D&D-like “level ups” – but it just works better with the tone of the novel this time around. Scott and Ramona also seem to be maturing a little: Ramona’s pointing out Scott’s flaws at times, and Scott’s starting to realize that he really needs to get his shit together and grow up. He’s not quite there yet, but at least realizes that.

I loved the introduction of the backstory of Scott’s major ex-girlfriend. It’s something that’s been hinted at for the past few volumes, but didn’t get any play until now. It helps a lot with understanding his character more. I’m also really loving the tidbits of backstory that we’re getting for Ramona’s exes: even though she’s still a mystery, we’re at least starting to get some idea of what she was like before.

Definitely starting to look forward to finishing the rest of the series a bit more than I was before. It’s looking up!
