Musing Monday: Reading Around People

Musing Mondays is a weekly meme hosted by Just One More Page.

Today’s Musing Mondays post is about tidy reading around people.

When is it appropriate to read in front of others? Is it ever appropriate?

There are a lot of places where I read in front of people: on public transit, in waiting rooms, and at home are the most common. I’ve even read in a waiting room while I’m waiting for an interview – as long as the book cover (and title) is tasteful and I’m prepared to drop it at a moment’s notice. At home, I read either in my room, or on the couch while my roommate and I are watching TV or something similar. I don’t read in front of people, even at home, during meals or at other times where I should be focusing on them instead of on a book.

I don’t read at family gatherings, even when I would like to. It just seems incredibly rude to be reading during one of the few visits I make in a year to see my family. I usually also don’t read when I’m on a road trip with someone in a car and they’re driving, but I will read on road trips on a bus or train.

One of the strangest places that I will read in front of people is sometimes on a date with my partner. I’d never do it with someone who I just started seeing, though. Sometimes, my partner and I will actually schedule ourselves a “reading date”, where we both bring a book and we head to a coffee shop to sit and read together. They’re actually lots of fun!
