Musing Mondays is a weekly meme hosted by Just One More Page.
Today’s Musing Mondays post is about multitasking.
Do you – or are you even able – to do other things while you read? Do you knit, hold a conversation, keep an eye on the TV? Anything?
I’m generally a multitasker, since I have a hard time focusing on any one thing for a long period of time – part and parcel of having ADD. With reading, though, it’s usually different.
When I’m reading, I tend not to be able to do anything else, because it distracts me from the text. If I’m watching TV or having a conversation, I’m not fully immersing myself into the book, and so I tend to “read” things but not actually absorb them. In the past when I have tried to do this, I have often found myself 10 pages farther in the book, but with no recollection whatsoever of what happened in those pages.
The exception for me is music – I can listen to quiet-ish music while I read, particularly when it’s in another language, like salsa music. It helps me to block out distractions, acting sort of like white noise.
It’s just so hard to get into the “reading flow” when you’re trying to multitask! Books are something to be enjoyed with your full attention.
