Musing Monday: Dust Jackets

March 8, 2010

Musing Mondays is a weekly meme hosted by Just One More Page.

Today’s Musing Mondays post is about dust jackets.

Do you prefer books with a dust jacket? What do you do with your dust jacket while reading? Leave it on or take it off?

I tend to prefer books without a dust jacket, largely just because of how I read. I tend to read in a variety of places – on the streetcar, at school, on the couch, on my bed (in many different positions) – and not all of those places are conducive to being comfortable reading a book with a giant piece of paper wrapped around it. I also find that if I travel with the book, the dust jacket gets all ripped and shabby-looking, and the book inside usually isn’t “pretty enough” without the jacket. Because of this, if the book does come with a dust jacket, I usually take the jacket off until I’m finished reading the book, and then put it back on before storing it on the shelf.

Since they are cheaper, and I buy a lot of books, I tend to buy my books in paperback format. This eliminates the problem of the dust jacket entirely!

I buy hardcovers because they last longer. I just take the jacket off. Here is mine

I don’t care if they have them or not, but if they do, I remove them while I read them. Here’s mine.
