BTT: Favo[u]rite Unknown

Booking Through Thursday is a weekly meme.

Who’s your favorite author that other people are NOT reading? The one you want to evangelize for, the one you would run popularity campaigns for? The author that, so far as you’re concerned, everyone should be reading–but that nobody seems to have heard of. You know, not JK Rowling, not Jane Austen, not Hemingway–everybody’s heard of them. The author that you think should be that famous and can’t understand why they’re not…

I think that everybody should read Elizabeth Pisani’s The Wisdom of Whores: Bureaucrats, Brothels, and the Business of AIDS. This is the only book she’s written so far, but her writing style is absolutely fabulous and she uncovers something that I think everyone should know about. I’m hopeful that she’ll keep writing, and maybe even branch out into other subjects, because she made me laugh and rage and basically devour her book.

For someone who’s more prolific, but underappreciated – I’d have to go with Timothy Findley. He’s famous in Canada, but I’m not really sure how widely-read he is in other parts of the world, and really wish that more people would know about him. Honestly, he’s right up there with the Big American Writers in my books.
