BBAW: My Favourite Blogs

September 13, 2010

This week (September 13-17, 2010) is Book Blogger Appreciation Week! BBAW is a week long festival celebrating the community of book bloggers and their contribution to preserving a culture of literacy through book reviews and recommendations, reading reflections, and general bookish chat.  Events include daily blogging topics, blogger interview swaps, special guest posts, and so much more!

Since I didn’t start book blogging until the very end of last year, this is my first BBAW as a participant! I’m very excited to be taking part, and am working hard at getting all of my posts together for you all to enjoy, as well as looking forward to reading other people’s posts.

Today’s blogging topic is “First Treasure”, and is explained like this:

We invite you to share with us about a great new book blog you’ve discovered since BBAW last year!  If you are new to BBAW or book blogging, share with us the very first book blog you discovered.  Tell us why this blog rocks your socks off and why you keep going back for more.

The very first two book blogs that I found were Hey Lady, Whatcha Readin’? and The Book Lady’s Blog. I soon developed a girlie blogger-crush on both of them; I just couldn’t believe that there were people around saying such awesome things about books! This wasn’t limited to them, either – I felt like that every single time I found a new and interesting book blog, for about my first 3 months of blogging. I’d get all giggly and squee-ish and my feed reader overflowed almost immediately. I’m not going to say much more about these two, because they’re already well-established and you likely all know about them already. (Just as a heads up, though, I interviewed them both for my Reading Roots series in the past couple weeks. If you haven’t seen them already, you can find these interviews here and here.)

Instead, I would like to highlight a few of my favourite book blogs that I found later on in my blogging life. I’ve been following all of these blogs for at least a few months now, and they each have their own something that makes me come back again and again. If you haven’t already checked them out, I think that you should!

Amy Reads is definitely one of my favourite book blogs. Amy is a Canadian book blogger (like me) who travels all over the place for work (not like me). This gives her tons and tons of time to read, as you can tell by the proliferation of reviews that she writes. I’ve said this before, but Amy and I have eerily similar tastes in reading: among other things, we both love to read books about current events, religion, and gender/sexuality/feminism/women’s issues. Amy also reads a lot of books written by international authors, and writes very in-depth reviews (both positive and negative) about the books she reads. Definitely a blog you should be reading!

Books I Done Read is another of my favourite book blogs. Raych reads a wide variety of books, some of which are similar to my tastes and some are not, but what’s important is this: her reviews (and posts about her life) are always hilarious to read. She says it best herself: “The Done Read is all about the three H’s: Honesty, Hilarity, and H’mad relatives.” You may or may not agree with what she says, but you’ll enjoy the candidness and informality that shine through in Raych’s posts.

Persnickety Snark is a book blog that I love even though the books featured there are not usually the kinds of books that I read. What keeps me reading Adele’s blog is, rather, the fantastic discussion posts. In many of her posts, there’s a certain level of sarcasm (snark, if you will) that grabs my attention even if it’s a review of a book that I have no interest in reading whatsoever. In that case, I’ll actually read Adele’s review anyways because I know that it will be in-depth and opinionated, just the way I like it; in the end, I’ll often end up adding a previously undesired book to my “to read” list just because she recommended it.

Do you have any favourite blogs that you’d like to recommend? Anybody who you think I might not read, but should? Hit me up in the comments!

*blush* Thank you for including me in your list. I feel all warm and fuzzy! I didn’t actually pay attention enough to realize there were these topics each day so my list of treasures will post at noon (and you may be on it 😀 heh).

You’re so cute! I see that I’m not the only person to feature you in the posts this week, so I’d be rather proud if I were you. 😉

I agree, Amy’s Blog is wonderful! Always so erudite and insightful. I haven’t visited some of the others that you mentioned, but I am going to have to check them out! Thanks!

I have been actually seriously book blogging for about three months, and that’s how I feel about some of my favorite blogs as well! It’s nice to find a teacher on here, so I’ve added you to my blogroll to keep track of what’s up! 🙂

Yay for more teachers! I really love reading the blogs of other teachers, it helps me with ideas and also feels a bit like there’s something shared between us, even if we don’t always talk about teaching.

Thank you so much for the mention, Carina. Glad you appreciate the heavy helping of sarcasm that I can’t help by dollop out.

And ditto, I’m a teacher too!

I do, indeed, enjoy the sarcasm! It’s such a nice change from the tone that most other book bloggers (including myself) take most of the time. 🙂
