24 Hour Read-A-Thon: Ready, Set, Go!

April 10, 2010

I set my alarm for 7:00am, giving me time to shut it off a few times and then wake up, have some food, and start reading. Of course, I apparently shut the alarm right off at some point and went back to sleep. But I’m awake now! Only an hour late, that’s not too bad.

Now that I’m awake, I’m settled on the futon couch in the living room to start with, and I’m having the breakfast of champions: Pirate cookies.

Reading, ahoy! I’m starting out with Too Much Happiness (Alice Munro), since I didn’t quite finish it last night. It’s the pick for my reading club next weekend.

Hour 1 Mini-Challenge:

Where are you reading from today?

Mostly from my apartment, either sitting on my futon couch in the living room, or on my bed in my room (once my roommate and boyfriend wake up and if they decide to watch tv or something) … and a few hours at a friend’s house during games night.

3 facts about me …

  1. I am sitting here in Christmas flannel pyjama pants and a red Canada sweatshirt that I got for Christmas a few years ago from my parents, right after they started selling the Vancouver 2010 merchandise – which means that it’s a way earlier “model” than most of the stuff people are wearing, and thus not as recognizable.
  2. I’ve always wanted to have a reason to read for a full 24 hours. I’m so excited!
  3. I have ADHD, so I’ll be having to make sure to stay on my medication properly throughout the day, otherwise I’m going to have trouble keeping myself on-task during the bounce-back period at the end of dosages. It would normally be fine, but not if I’m trying to pack in as much reading as I possibly can!

How many books do you have in your TBR pile for the next 24 hours?

There are 13 possible books sitting out on the table with me. We’ll see which ones get read, though.

Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon (i.e. number of books, number of pages, number of hours, or number of comments on blogs)?

Just to read as much as I can, and try not to get sucked in too much into reading other blogs and stuff.

If you’re a veteran read-a-thoner, Any advice for people doing this for the first time?

Nope, this is my first time!

Hour 2 Mini-Challenge:

In this challenge we would like you to write a post on your blogs about your kick off strategy.  What have you surrounded yourself with for these early hours of the challenge besides your books?  Is there a coffee thermos, lucky book mark, snacks, pillow….  We want to know how you have prepared so you do not have to leave your cozy reading space (by the way – we’d like to know what is too…. (are you still in bed, a chair, the couch…..)

Well, I’ve already sort of talked about this above. I just finished that row of Pirate cookies that sufficed as my breakfast a few minutes ago. Other than that, I didn’t really prepare that much.

I have a ton of tea in my cupboard for once I need it, but aside from that, I’m kind of winging it!
